Namibian mobile telecommunication giant MTC selects Premier HR from Softline VIP

Just weeks ahead of its official Premier HR launch in Namibia, Softline VIP secured its first Namibian-based customer, Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), the largest mobile telecommunications company in Namibia providing cellular access, with over 1.3 million active subscribers.

A long-time user of VIP Payroll, Jessica Moore, manager: employee development at MTC, says the immediate integration between the company's payroll and Premier HR was a major draw-card and significant advantage for Softline VIP.

“MTC did not have an electronic performance management system in place and we thus started from the beginning. Premier HR, aside from its natural integration with VIP Payroll, is a very exciting product. It offers us a fully functional HR solution that stretches from job management and document management to fully functional performance management, succession planning and suitability analyses.”

Moore says MTC's implementation will hopefully pioneer the way forward for local companies to consider implementing a comprehensive HR solution such as Premier HR. “There are too many Namibian businesses that rely on manual processes. It is time-consuming and there is too much room for error. Implementing a solution like this helps eradicate any duplication and overlap. It ultimately automates a large portion of the HR procedures and makes the process easier to manage.”

The implementation has kicked off with a series of scoping and analysis sessions, which Moore says is intense but necessary. “The Softline VIP team is superb. We have formed an excellent partnership and will work well together to ensure the HR solution is appropriate for our 400-strong employee base.”

Emile Bosman, HOD, HR Business Services at Softline VIP, says that HR is a business imperative and one that is underestimated in terms of its strategic value and the impact it has on a business. “Many businesses fail to recognise the bigger role HR can play in business operations. I firmly believe that HR should be more effectively integrated into business decisions to truly maximise its value to the business.”

Bosman says MTC is no different to any other company; its people are its biggest asset. Unfortunately, he says that they are also the greatest change variable. “Good HR processes, such as those incorporated in Premier HR, will standardise what needs to be done and enhance the overall business effectiveness and profitability.”

Moore says the existing relationship with Softline VIP assisted MTC in making its decision. “Moving from a manual process is a significant challenge for any company and knowing who Softline VIP is and the quality of its payroll product helped the team tremendously.”

She says Premier HR is such an exciting opportunity for Namibia and MTC. As for working with Softline VIP, Moore says she wouldn't have it any other way.

MTC

MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Limited) was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), Telia and Swedfund. During May 2004, NPTH concluded a deal that saw it hold 100% of the shares in MTC by acquiring the 49% held by Telia Overseas AB and Swedfund International AB. During 2006, the sale of 34% of MTC shares to Portugal Telecom was concluded for N$1.34 billion, while the Namibian government retains the remainder of the stake through NPTH.

MTC currently covers 98% of the population of nearly 2 million citizens with more than 650 base stations and repeaters and offers a dual band 900/1800MHZ. The company also expanded its cellular coverage to all major towns in Namibia, including the major arterial roads. It further runs two modern MSCs (mobile switching centres) in Windhoek and Oshakati, with capacity to accommodate rapidly rising number of customers of over 1.3 million active users. MTC also operates the only full service customer contact centre in Namibia dealing with service queries ranging from telephony, SMS, fax, GPRS, data, voicemail and 3G/HSDPA. A staff of 400 persons serves a diverse market of both pre- and post-paid subscribers.
