MTC Namibia, the leading GSM operator in Namibia recently launched a trial of the Push-To-Talk (PTT) facility with Namibian Police. If successfully launched, Namibia will be the second country on the continent where the service will be available.
At the official hand-over of the test phones to the Namibian Police, The Managing Director of MTC, Mr Jos'e Ferreira indicated the importance of the equipping the national security and emergency services with the latest technologies to execute their functions well. He stated "Namibia has a worldclass mobile network and it is important that we avail the latest solutions to all our customers. PTT is one such innovation we wish to launch in 2007 and the Police service will have the privilege to test the functionalities throughout December".
Lt General Ndeitunga, Inspector General of the Namibian Police thanked MTC for availing the test equipment to his forces. He stated that "This is a private-public partnership we are proud to embrace. Our officers in the field will appreciate any improvements in costs of communication and efficiency of service delivery that PTT will give us."
The trial will be for the month of December 2006 as part of the National Road Safety campaign Xupifa Eemwenyo, before a commercial launch takes place in 2007. Push-To-Talk functions like a two-way radio over the cellular network using a mobile phone that is appropriately enabled with relevant software.
