Motorola, Ericsson in radio venture

Motorola says it is partnering with LM Ericsson AB, the Swedish maker of telecommunications equipment, to develop public-safety radio equipment using the latest technology for wireless broadband, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

The partnership will help Motorola create public-safety communications equipment that could be used to relay video wirelessly from traffic collision scenes, Ericsson says.

The partnership comes two months after Motorola said it is selling its own network equipment unit to Nokia Siemens, one of Ericsson's competitors.

Valley to test fastest network

The Valley will soon become the US's first and only test site for the fastest wireless technology entering the marketplace, a leap in cellphone and Internet service that could drive down prices for consumers, reports the Arizona Republic.

The tests are part of an intense competition in Arizona and elsewhere between Clearwire and its competitors to provide fourth-generation, long-term-evolution, or 4G LTE, technology.

The emerging wireless technology is expected to provide download and upload speeds equal to cable Internet and exponentially faster than the 3G technology used by cellphone-service providers now.

Mobile devices boost patient diagnosis

Pictures taken with cellphones and other mobile devices by patients can help doctors diagnose wounds without seeing the patients in person, according to early findings of a six-month study on mobile health technology, iHealthBeat states

Mobile health - known as mHealth - is an emerging telemedicine field that includes all aspects of care that can be facilitated through a mobile device or cell phone.

For the study, Neal Sikka - an emergency department physician at George Washington University Hospital - and colleagues recruit patients who arrive at the hospital with cuts; skin infections; rashes and other flesh wounds.
