Local Web site AfriCam scooped the People`s Voice Award in the kids category at the international Webby Awards, the Oscars of the Internet held in San Francisco last week.

Presented by the International Academy for Digital Arts and Sciences, The Webby Awards honours Web sites for their achievement in technology and creativity. The fifth annual Webby Awards took place on Wednesday, 18 July, at San Francisco`s War Memorial Opera House.

The Webby Awards has two winners for each category, one judged by the panel of experts and one voted for by the Internet public. In the kids category, AfriCam won the Internet vote and www.factmonster.com won the judges` vote. Over 400 000 Internet votes were cast.

AfriCam CEO Peter Armitage says: "It is flattering to be acknowledged alongside sites like CNN, National Geographic and The Motley Fool."

However, Armitage points out that the kids category selection for AfriCam was problematic. "We are not really just a kids site, but there was no animals, wildlife or entertainment categories. However, winning the award in any category is an honour."

AfriCam.com is a live wildlife-viewing site drawing a strong global audience. It claims 30 million page impressions per month.

Other winners in various categories include www.hotornot.com in the fashion category and IGN for the gaming category, while requiemforadream.com walked away with the best movie Web site accolade.

Cult news spoof site TheOnion.com won both the judges` and Internet votes.
