LayerOne, the Nokia Intellisync Distributor for Africa, has recently signed a deal with Internet Solutions (IS).
This deal provides the IS sales, pre-sales and engineering division with mobile access to the Internet, as well as access to essential company applications such as e-mail.
The service, which comprises of HSDPA devices and Internet bundles for laptop users, as well as "push" e-mail using Intellisync to laptops and mobile phones, was initiated a month ago. It has been rolled out to about 70% of the user-base and is expected to reach 200 users within the organisation shortly.
Paul Sch"onborn, the Mobile Solutions Business Unit Manager of Internet Solutions, says: "It has become clear that in order to realise the opportunity and growth in our market, we need to be in the field more than we are in the office. In other words, we need to be in front of our clients. To achieve this, an organisation needs to be able to communicate not only through voice, but the most widely used communication tool in the world which is e-mail. The added benefit of mobile Internet access is another huge benefit.
"LayerOne allows us to extend e-mail to mobile users on their phones or on their laptops which makes sales and engineering independent of the office in order to communicate. For users that prefer laptops, LayerOne provides an HSDPA solution with Intellisync for easy and fast access to e-mail, as well as making use of the IS 'Secure Connect' solution for secure connectivity back to the company network.
"I use both these services personally and it has changed the way I work. They have undoubtedly assisted me in becoming more productive," says Sch"onborn.
LayerOne believes that the growth in mobility solutions is about to hit an all time high. Companies are starting to see the benefit of using GSM technologies like HSDPA to replace legacy services like dial-up which are inflexible, static and provide poor bandwidth speeds. Even though there are a lot of mobile solutions today, LayerOne believe that it will take a long time for any of the market offerings to reach the coverage of GSM.
"Every month we have seen the demand double for HSDPA and Intellisync services in the corporate market. I think this is largely due to the current and growing awareness of the technologies and the urgency to become more mobile and more productive. IS are one of many companies that have taken this step and we have been very excited to be a partner and provider in this regard. We encourage companies to evaluate these services as well as evaluate other similar technologies in the market to ensure that you find the right solution for your organisation," comments Stuart Hardy, MD of LayerOne.
