Kenya Petroleum Refineries selects IBM Maximo for its asset management, maintenance capabilities

Working with Powertech IST Data (P-IST Data), a premier business partner for IBM in South Africa, KPRL ensures greater value from its existing business - reducing risk and controlling costs through better utilisation of assets and resources.

Kenya Petroleum Refineries (KPRL) serves the East African region in the supply of a range of oil products, including liquefied petroleum gas, unleaded premium gasoline, regular petrol, automotive gas oil, industrial diesel, fuel oil, and special products like bitumen and grease.

KPRL has two refinery complexes with distillation, hydro treating, catalytic reforming, and bitumen production units. KPRL is a 4 million metric tonne per annum refinery in Mombasa, Kenya and the Mombasa refinery is the only refinery in Eastern Africa.

Companies in the oil and gas industry are under increasing pressure to meet production targets, reduce production costs and maintain the highest safety and environmental standards - all in the face of uncertain market conditions. In order to achieve operational excellence and deliver on the promise of higher availability and reliability, organisations must initiate solutions that improve communication and collaboration with suppliers and service provisioning companies to create further efficiencies.

“KPRL did not have a centralised database system for their operational management purposes and needed a solution that would fit their environment in the oil and gas industry. With IBM Maximo 7 for Oil & Gas, they would be able to manage all of their infrastructure assets in one single solution, increase the productivity of existing assets, reduce risk and control operating costs,” says Paul Taylor, Project Manager for Powertech IST Data.

Through an open tender process, KPRL decided on Powertech IST Data's proposed solution. The tender was awarded on the basis of the competitive price and the company's reference site at Kuwait National Petroleum Company that has recorded major successes and is also a forerunner of the IBM Maximo for Oil & Gas solution.

“We have identified our key processes and found that the IBM Maximo for Oil & Gas solution fits our processes like a glove,” says Richard Tairo, IT Manager at KPRL. “Maximo is a best-of-breed solution, which offers superior functionality, a strong heritage within the oil and gas sector and integration capabilities," said Tairo.

Through IBM Maximo, KPRL will be provided with best practices to improve the productivity of its critical assets. It will be able to improve and extend the life of its assets and minimise its operating costs as well as provide tools for measuring and analysing business performance across the board. Most importantly, business capital will be freed through improved inventory and procurement management, reducing KPRL's obsolete and duplicate stock - a significant problem for maintenance within the refining industry.

"We are delighted to be supporting this implementation with KPRL as it aims to be a benchmark of best practice within the global oil refining industry. Through IBM Maximo we can help support their vision with a fully integrated system that enables optimum use of all its assets. KPRL will be able to extend the life of its business-critical assets and better manage its inventory to reduce costs,” said Taylor.
