Insurance firm eliminates spam, stops viruses with CA`s eTrust Secure Content Manager

Computer Associates International, Inc (NYSE: CA) today announced that United Heritage Life Insurance Company (UHLIC), a leading life insurance, annuity and financial products provider, has stemmed the onslaught of spam and virus-infected e-mails with eTrust Secure Content Manager (eTrust SCM).

eTrust SCM`s automated, policy-based protection has prevented IT administrators and end-users alike from losing countless hours of productivity, while protecting critical data from being corrupted or compromised.

Before implementing eTrust SCM, almost half of the e-mails the company received daily were spam - with another 5% containing some form of virus. After implementing eTrust SCM, that deluge has been reduced to a trickle - a reduction of nearly 99%. No virus-infected messages have made it past the gateway.

eTrust SCM has also simplified security management for UHLIC. The company`s IT staff previously spent two to three hours each day addressing content security issues. That has been reduced to just 30 minutes per week.

"We had reached the point where we thought spam was simply a problem that we were going to have to live with," said Shawn Turner, manager of network operations at UHLIC. "Now, we have it completely under control."

In addition to consuming the time it took to delete them, spam messages also consumed considerable storage capacity - since UHLIC is required to archive all of its e-mail activity. And, when users received infected messages, IT staff would have to spend time removing the infection and preventing its spread.

These security issues also posed a potential threat to critical corporate data. Viruses can corrupt data and may also contain "spyware" variants that can lead to serious security breaches. With eTrust SCM, both these types of threats have been effectively addressed.

eTrust SCM also enables the inspection of outbound content to ensure that sensitive customer data, intellectual property and other sensitive files are not sent outside the company for non-legitimate purposes. Using customised business rules, the solution monitors for compliance with government laws and regulations including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

UHLIC takes advantage of CA`s Security Advisor (http://ca.com/securityadvisor) to update its rules and policies for content filtering. The CA Security Advisor service tracks global security threats through a network of rapid response centres located around the world and quickly relays relevant security information to CA customers.

UHLIC completed its implementation of eTrust SCM in just two days by taking advantage of CA Technology Services` seasoned experts and proven methodologies.

"Spam robs employees of their time, consumes valuable IT resources and can compromise data integrity," said Sam Curry, vice-president of eTrust security management solutions at CA. "United Heritage`s experience demonstrates once again that CA`s eTrust Secure Content Manager is an extraordinarily effective solution for solving the spam problem - while stopping viruses and preventing unauthorised use of enterprise e-mail systems."
