India performs robotic surgery
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have performed the first robot-assisted surgery in India, says Net Indian.
Following the surgery, the AIIMS Department of Urology is developing a training programme in robotic surgery, including the virtual simulation system for imparting this skill to future robotic surgeons.
Facilities and programmes are being developed to offer state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology to patients suffering from various urological diseases.
Canada invests in rehab system
Canada has invested $1.5 million in a computer-assisted rehabilitation environment system at the Glenrose Hospital in Edmonton, reports The Montreal Gazette.
The virtual reality rehabilitation system will rehabilitate injured soldiers and other patients; there one of only two sites in Canada with such technology.
Canadian defence minister Peter MacKay says: “The system should be operational by early next year and will serve Western Canada and a computer-assisted rehabilitation system will also be installed at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre.”
UK Healthcare records get suspended
The development of a medical records database for patients in England has been halted in some areas, after doctors criticised the speed of the system roll-out, states BBC News.
The UK Department of Health has delayed the roll-out of a computer-based healthcare records system as concerns around security and patient confidentiality have been raised.
A spokesman for the department says records would not be created until there was better awareness about the system as more than 1.25 million patients' records have already gone into the database.
