International Business Machines (IBM) will invest $100 million over the next three years in a research initiative, with a special focus in China as Beijing embarks on a multibillion-dollar plan to upgrade its healthcare system.

IBM said the initiative would address rising global demand for digitised medical and health information systems that industry professionals would need to improve their services.

Such demand could be especially strong in China on the back of the country's ongoing $124 billion healthcare reform aimed at establishing a nationwide medical and healthcare system in urban and rural areas.

In China, IBM said it had teamed up with Peking University People's Hospital to build an evidence-based clinical care solution focused on chronic disease management.

The system integrated a comprehensive view of a patient's health, best practices from previous diagnoses, treatment and research to provide doctors with clinical decision support at the point of care, it said.

The initiative would draw on IBM's expertise in systems integration, services research and cloud computing, to allow medical practitioners to focus on patient care, it added.
