Mobile World Congress 2023: Li Peng, corporate senior VP and president of the Huawei Carrier Business Group, has called on the ICT industry to pursue low-carbon and sustainable development.
Peng said in addition to business success, the industry needs to achieve its green development goals.
He made the comments during Huawei's MWC Barcelona 2023 Day 0 Forum. Hosted annually on the sidelines of the event, this year’s Day 0 summit was themed “green ICT development”.
To promote green development in the industry, the energy-efficiency of ICT networks needs to be improved, stated Peng. “This can help us maintain stable energy consumption as global traffic continues to grow.”
According to Peng, in 2022, the ITU-T officially introduced NCIe, an indicator to measure the intensity of network carbon emissions. Furthermore, the GSM Association’s blueprint for green development unpacks the importance of building a green indicator system and presents a wide range of services.
This year, discussions at MWC Barcelona have zoned-in on sustainability and the efforts the mobile industry is making to build a greener ICT industry.
The ICT industry, through the ITU, is targeting 2030 to reduce carbon emissions by 45%. In addition, at the 2021 United Nations climate conference, COP26, countries increased their ambition to limit global heating.
For its part, Huawei has global carriers deploying green solutions across 100 countries, revealed Peng. In France, for example, Huawei motivates customers to create innovative energy-efficiency indicators.
“The indicator-driven green networks not only improve experience, but also increase network energy-efficiency,” commented Peng.
He added that Huawei is making efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its production and operation activities, including developing a mission reduction strategy and solar power projects at one of its factories in China.
“Moving forward, Huawei will continue to increase the share of renewable energy in our energy mix.”
MWC Barcelona 2023 is under way until 2 March.
