HUAWEI Mate50 Pro puts next-gen mobile photography in your hand

When high-end smartphones generally match feature for feature, the real differentiator becomes camera quality, particularly for users who regularly create content and live their lives on social media.

Huawei’s new HUAWEI Mate50 Pro addresses the traditional challenges of mobile photography with its XMAGE technology, which incorporates key advances to the optical system, mechanical structure, imaging technology and image processing. The new HUAWEI Mate50 Pro features a 50MP main camera with 10-level adjustable physical aperture size and pro-level bokeh, with image resolution up to 8 192 × 6 144 pixels. It also includes a 64MP f/F3.5 aperture telephoto camera with up 200x zoom range and a 13MP f/2.2 aperture Ultra-Wide-Angle 3D Depth Sensing rear camera for great group selfies, even in low light.

XMAGE, Huawei’s new in-house imaging brand, debuts in the HUAWEI Mate50 Pro and represents years of research and development spanning seven research centres and eight research fields across the globe. XMAGE is designed to deliver meticulous colour reproduction and a range of lighting effects, with an RYYB ultra-sensing imaging unit that replaces green pixels in the photosensitive sensor with yellow super pixels, increasing the light intake by 40%. Image algorithms have also been upgraded by adopting an XD Fusion Pro ultra-HD image engine and enhanced computing for clearer and more detailed images.

The 10-level aperture adjustment is the feature most likely to make mobile photographers sit up and pay attention: in ‘Professional’ mode, experienced users can precisely control the opening and closing of the aperture blades from f/1.4 to f/4.0. At f/1.4, you’ll achieve a very shallow depth of field with an out-of-focus foreground and background – perfect for portraits and special effects.

Huawei’s new technology delivers pleasing bokeh while the photo subject stands out more from the surroundings, with smooth skin, natural skin tone and brighter eye effect. Optical level blurring also works for video capture, giving you cinematic-style videos with more dimension.

Wide aperture will also allow a great deal more light into the camera, which means better low-light shots.

The HUAWE Mate50 Pro Ultra Aperture Camera takes in up to 24% more light thanks to the ultra-large apertures and RYYB sensor, working with the XD Fusion Pro image engine to keep brightness and contrasts pristine. This means those hard-to-capture sunsets and city lights are far easier to photograph – with less risk of noise, blurring and light flare.

The HUAWEI Mate50 Pro Auto Mode takes over when you’re enjoying the moment too much to worry about camera settings: with options like ‘Super Night’ Mode to do justice to neon-lit night scapes. When shooting in Night Mode, the preview image in the viewfinder gradually brightens and clears up with smooth transitions, further enhancing the shooting experience.

With Macro and even Super Macro to make the most of the little things as close as 2.5cm from the lens, the HUAWEI Mate50 Pro also supports macro video shooting and macro picture-in-picture (PiP) to accurately convey scenes in motion.

The camera also offers AI Cinemagraph, Story Creator, Audio Zoom, High-Res, Time-Lapse, Ultra-Wide-Angle, Dual-View Video, Portrait, Slow-Mo, Panorama, Monochrome, Light painting, Filter, Stickers, Documents, Master AI, Moving Picture, Snapshot, 4D Predictive Focus, Capture Smiles, Audio Control, Timer and Burst Shooting modes.

Huawei's imaging colour research team used 3.3 million submissions from the NEXT-IMAGE contest, coupled with intensive R&D, to launch its own unique XMAGE style that fuses science with culture and aesthetics with technology. XMAGE now offers three style options – original for colours and textures as you see them; vivid for striking contrasts between bright and dark areas; and bright for balanced light and clear contrasts.

On top of the imaging advances, the HUAWEI Mate50 Pro also makes sharing and storing photos and videos fast and easy. Huawei Mate50 Pro phones are the first to run the EMUI 13 operating system, which streamlines daily interactions, and SuperHub, which allows users to temporarily store images, documents and text, and share them in batches, with free transfers between apps and devices.

To avoid sharing sensitive information along with photos, EMUI 13 provides an Image Privacy Protection function, which can erase sensitive information such as location information, device model and shooting time, with one tap.

The HUAWE Mate50 Pro is now available from selected retail stores or the Huawei online store. The smartphone is priced at R24 999 for the 256GB and R26 999 for the 512GB.
