HP wins $135m Medicaid contract
Hewlett-Packard has won a $135 million, eight-year contract from the Alabama Medicaid Agency to manage the state's Medicaid management information system, reports the San Francisco Business Journal.
The new contract extends a 30-year relationship HP has with the medical aid agency, which covers 900 000 state residents.
Last year, HP processed nearly 32 million Medicaid claims for Alabama healthcare providers in 2009.
United Health, McKesson bulk up IT
US health insurer United Health Group and drug distributor McKesson are vying for billions of dollars in added sales by bulking up their IT units, says Bloomberg.
The companies are expanding beyond their core business to help insurers cope with the health overhaul, which threatens to swamp industry computer systems, said Joanne Galimi, a Boston- based analyst for technology researcher Gartner.
Bracing for added taxes and regulations, insurers are upgrading long-neglected systems used to enrol members, track care and process claims, Galimi said.
