Google today launched Google Go, a new app that provides a lighter, faster way to search on low-RAM Android devices.

The Google Go app will come preinstalled on low-end Android devices and is also available to download form the Android app store.

Google says the app was developed to enhance user experience by helping users save data and storage. "Weak data connectivity, high data costs and low RAM or storage space often make it hard for people to get the most out of the Internet. Google Go is built to handle these challenges," Google said in a statement.

All devices with 1GB RAM or less launched by carriers in SA will have the app pre-installed.

"Users come to us to experience the Web and access accurate information quickly. Unfortunately, users can't always decide on the type of device they have or the kind of connection they are on," says Google Africa chief marketing officer Mzamo Masito.

"Google Go is designed from the ground up to address these issues and provide a seamless experience irrespective of what device or network the user is on."

The app is quick to download. Within the app, users can search like they normally would on Google search, but the results will be data-light. There are also options to browse for specific low-sized media like inspirational quotes, gifs and video.

Location services are integrated so users can search for places and restaurants nearby.

Google says: "It uses the latest version of Google's advanced compression algorithm, using up to 40% less data to display search results. Search results are also cached on the device so you can quickly re-access previous searches, even when you're offline, without incurring further data costs.

"When there's no Internet access, Google Go retries failed search requests in the background and lets you know as soon as the results are ready. Web pages load quickly, even in data-saving mode or on 2G connections."

Google Go also has smart word suggestions and supports voice search.

It is available today in 26 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa through the Google Play Store. It will come pre-installed on all Android Oreo (Go edition) devices, available in stores soon. The app is available for devices running Android Jelly Bean and above.
