The University of Cape Town's (UCT) Paediatric unit can now collaborate with peers globally, improving mindshare and bringing medical innovation to the continent. Dax Data, local Adobe Connect distributor, has witnessed an increasing trend towards tertiary institutions' adoption of Adobe's Web conferencing software to improve collaboration and manage workloads.
UCT, one of Africa's premier teaching and research institutions, is renowned internationally for its scope of study and the calibre of its graduates. Professor Alp Numanoglu, head of the university's Department of Paediatric Surgery and a member of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS) committee, recently implemented Adobe Connect to encourage collaboration among peers, and retain UCT's status as a top academic university.
Adobe Connect has made it possible for participants to engage in a virtual environment from any location, at any time - eliminating technical boundaries. "We participate in panel discussions and are able to have four or five experts give their opinions on a particular topic, whether this be relating to a patient or perhaps interpreting an X-ray. This can all be done via the chat box, which is used extensively. Recently, we had a colleague from Venezuela showing us a video of an operation and discussing the procedure with us," says Professor Numanoglu.
For optimal convenience and efficiency, medical practitioners and interested parties can participate live or view recordings of the latest surgical innovations and techniques. A recent presentation to the South African endoscopic surgery society was reported extremely successful and views of the video recordings are growing at a rate of approximately 300 per month.
"Thanks to Adobe Connect, participants now have immediate access to information and are no longer affected by the limitations of their environment. Attendance and participation in meetings is possible with no specialist hardware or software - all that is required is an internet connection," explains Professor Numanoglu.
Further endorsing the versatility of Adobe Connect, Jeremy Matthews, CEO of Dax Data, says: "Adobe Connect is an Enterprise e-communication platform that is highly scalable. Thanks to the modular nature of its components, it is possible to customise the solution to meet the client's needs exactly. Modules can be added as and when required. A particularly attractive feature is the API (Application Program Interface) whereby programs like Power Point can be added and connected directly into Connect."
