Gadgets expose children to pornography
Two-thirds of elementary students surveyed in the Greater Jakarta area have been exposed to pornography, thus increasing their vulnerability to sex addiction, a survey shows, says The Jakarta Post.
The survey of 2 818 fourth, fifth and sixth grade elementary school students in Jakarta, Depok and Bekasi conducted between January 2008 and February 2010 showed 67% had seen pornographic material through computer games, comics and Web sites.
“Most of the children accessed pornography from gadgets given to them by their parents, who only gave them the devices as symbols of prestige,” survey team psychologist Elly Risman says.
Breast cancer iPhone app available
An iPhone application to remind women to check for signs of breast cancer has been released after it was revealed that 50% of females are not carrying out regular checks, reports Nursing In Practice.
Designed to improve understanding of the disease, the iBreastCheck application allows women to set a personalised alert to check for any unusual symptoms after a study for Breakthrough Breast Cancer revealed that half of women questioned did not examine themselves on a regular basis.
The survey also revealed that 53% of women do not know that drinking alcohol can increase their risk of developing breast cancer, 47% do not think putting on weight could have the same effect, and 44% do not know they could reduce their chances of the disease by exercising regularly.
Aussies obsess over smartphones
Research by Telstra has revealed Australians admit to using the Internet-connected gadgets everywhere from under the covers in bed to sitting on the toilet and, most alarmingly, behind the wheel, says Herald Sun.
The trends have emerged in the inaugural Telstra Smartphone Index. It showed huge growth in smartphone sales over the past 12 months, with models such as Apple's iPhone 4 and the HTC Desire making up more than half of Telstra's mobile phone hand-set sales.
An estimated 36% of Australian mobile phone owners now have a smartphone and this is expected to grow to more than 50% over the next 12 months.
