DTI signs IP telephony deal

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) today announced a R19.5 million deal with Dimension Data and Moloko ERS for the implementation of a Nortel Networks Internet Protocol (IP) network and telephony solution. The deal sees the DTI`s currently widespread locations being merged into a consolidated environment.

"Dimension Data`s converged network solution will offer the DTI a secure, robust and cost-effective infrastructure in a single location and we also anticipate considerable cost savings once implementation is completed," says Alroy Dirks, chief information officer of the DTI.

Dimension Data, in partnership with Nortel Networks and Moloko ERS, demonstrated that the proposed solution could deliver on the business requirements of the DTI with the lowest cost of ownership, while not compromising on performance and features.

"A consolidated campus environment would allow for the high level of inter-cooperation among the service providers that is needed to deliver on the DTI`s vision of being a citizen-focused organisation. While reliability, cost of ownership and return on investment (ROI) were key considerations, the solution had to provide support for analogue, digital and IP extensions, and be based on open standards," says Tony Wilson, Enterprise Director at Nortel Networks.

"The successful implementation of a converged network and IP telephony system that meets the unique requirements of the DTI paves the way for further interaction with government," says Jeff Jack, Network Solutions Technology Marketing Manager at Dimension Data.

"We are pleased to be a part of this milestone deployment of IPT and state of the art networking platform within the government sector. As a black empowered company, this project has presented us with the perfect opportunity to build our technical skills and resources," concludes Teboho Joala, Director of Telecommunications at Moloko ERS.

The implementation is scheduled for completion in August 2004.
