Dell Computer and Oracle on Wednesday said they had struck a development agreement to provide users of the free Linux operating system with Intel-based servers that run Oracle software.
Dell, the world`s number one direct seller of personal computers, will deliver a Linux server that comes bundled with Oracle`s 9i database or 9i application server, said Bob Shimp, Oracle`s senior director of database marketing.
Oracle is the second-largest software maker and dominates the database software market.
The companies said they also will establish a Linux centre at Dell`s corporate campus in Austin, Texas. Customers who visit the centre, which is scheduled to open in the spring, can test their computer programs on Dell`s Linux servers.
Corporate and individual adoption of the Linux operating system is on the rise and industry watchers suggest that it could supplant Microsoft`s popular Windows operating system.
Dell shares closed $2 lower at $26-1/8 on Wednesday. Redwood City, California-based Oracle also was down $1-3/16 to finish the session at $29-1/8.
