Citect ensures cost-effective automation solution

Citect awarded contract to supply the plant process control system for Smokey Hills Platinum Mine

GRD Minproc has been tasked by Phokataba Platinum, a subsidiary of Platinum Australia Limited, to design, procure, construct and commission a platinum concentrator plant to be located on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex, some 36 kilometres by road from Steelpoort in the Greater Thubatse Local Municipality in the Limpopo Province.

The envisaged development would involve an initial open-cut operation to mine approximately 10% of the UG2 reef. The balance will be mined from relatively shallow underground operations.

A simple and effective control system will be required to meet the process control requirements over the expected life of the mine of some seven years.

Through the commitment of Schneider-Electric and Citect to GRD Minproc to the success of this project, a complete automation solution based on two Modicon Premium PLCs and a VijeoCitect SCADA System was offered to meet the challenges of a cost-effective design without reducing any functionality that might be required for the current and possible future requirements.

Citect, a wholly owned subsidiary of Schneider-Electric, will design, engineer, test, commission and document the complete automation system according to the Citect Professional Services Engineering Standards.

Components such as PLC Cubicles and the Fibre Optic Network Infrastructure will be constructed, installed and tested by Citect Partners under the leadership of the Citect Project Manager.

Construction, software development and engineering will start at the end of February 2008 and commissioning is planned to begin at the start of June 2008.
