Cisco unveils Intelligent Urbanisation

Cisco Systems has unveiled a hi-tech green initiative for cities, named Intelligent Urbanisation, which focuses on public safety and security, transportation, buildings, energy, healthcare, and education, states Tech Blorge.

The enhanced strategy targets these important sectors in terms of business, but also serves as a way of improving the quality of life for city dwellers.

Cisco CEO John Chambers made this clear when he said: “Each of these market segments has the potential to generate over $1 billion in revenue opportunities for Cisco. At the same time, Intelligent Urbanisation could be the future of utilities, combining integrated city management, better quality of life for citizens, and economic development.”

Green IT helps Oz save

According to federal government chief information officer Ann Steward, Australian federal agencies will chase green technology such as virtualisation to help meet Razor gang targets, reports Australian IT.

She said work on the “whole of government data centre strategy” had been accelerated. "The quick wins will be in green IT, and some are not hugely technical."

Steward, who is driving the Australian Government Information Management Office's adoption of the Gershon reform programme, says the bigger changes will come from adopting smarter approaches.

Montgomery County goes green

Montgomery County has launched a green task force of lawmakers, bureaucrats, educators, entrepreneurs and utilities to help shape the county into a destination hotspot for the clean technology industry, says Business Journal.

The new Green Economy Task Force is working with local consulting firms to come up with a strategic plan by mid-year. It hopes to create a business atmosphere which will attract environmentally-friendly companies, widely seen as the next growth sector for the country.

“Montgomery County is really ideally situated to replicate what it did 25 years ago in the biotechnology sector ... and become a real leader” in green technology, said Dick Wegman, chairman of the task force and attorney with Garvey Schubert Barer law firm.
