Seedstars, an international start-up competition for emerging markets with a local chapter, has announced the three start-ups based in the Western Cape that made it through the first round.
The finalists will travel to Johannesburg next month to take part in the finals.
HouseME, which connects tenants to residential landlords, took first place. The company provides letting services for a fraction of agency fees and describes itself as "the Airbnb for long-term lets".
Slide Financial, which offers white-label digital wallets and easy-to-use payment APIs used by businesses to create sharing-economy or investment apps, came second.
Kuba, which partners with small business owners to bring them digital tools that help them access new markets as well as streamline their operations, was placed third.
The other start-ups invited to pitch in Cape Town included: DealZapp, a location-based self-service special offers platform; GreenFingers Mobile, an app which enables access to market and finance for small farmers; JOBJACK, an online marketplace for entry-level jobs; Jumpin Rides, an urban mobility platform; Digs Connect, a student accommodation marketplace; Tutor Roots, connecting tutors to students; and Vibescout, which provides event listings and city guides.
The Johannesburg leg of the Seedstars event will take place next Friday, 2 November, at the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Braamfontein. Start-ups have until Thursday to submit an application to take part in the pitching session.
The Seedstars South Africa finals will be held on 14 November.
