Cape Town, Digify Africa link up to lift SMEs

The City of Cape Town has partnered with Digify Africa to host a two-day free online programme to help local SMEs and entrepreneurs boost their business.

Digify Africa is an initiative by youth agency Livity Africa, which has facilitated various face-to-face training sessions for imparting digital skills from large tech companies. The organisation has a partnership with Facebook, focused on offering digital skills and internet safety training.

In a statement, the city says the online programme is called “Boost with Facebook”, noting it aims to support small businesses and entrepreneurs with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy.

Boost with Facebook is designed to help SMEs and entrepreneurs develop a digital footprint for their businesses by using tools such as Facebook Business Page, WhatsApp for Business and Instagram for Business.

According to the city, registration for virtual participation is free, adding that all participants require is a device with internet connectivity to join the training sessions.

The first session will take place on 9 November, with a focus on how to use WhatsApp to grow a business. The second session takes place on 10 November, and will look at how to build an online presence on Facebook.

The city indicates that physical participation will also be available, but at limited capacity and seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Small businesses the world over have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many struggling to stay afloat or closing their doors.

In the Mastercard SME Index, which surveyed 300 SMMEs between April and mid-May 2021, 84% of the respondents said the pandemic negatively impacted their revenue, citing limited digital acumen as a hindrance to growth potential.

As a result, they expressed that upskilling staff and growing digitally will help drive business in a post-COVID-19 world.
