The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) is inviting applications for participation in the upcoming BRICS Young Scientist Forum (YSF), scheduled to take place in Brazil from 6 to 8 November.
The 2019 BRICS YSF will be held under the themes of cyber security and bio-economy, and South Africans are invited to submit online abstracts for oral presentations with a specific focus on the themes.
The DSI says BRICS YSF aims to highlight the strategic importance of science, technology and innovation as key drivers of youth entrepreneurship and leadership.
According to the department, the call is open to early career researchers, scientists, engineers, technologists, innovators, science journalists and professionals or specialists in research and technology, who are up to the age of 40 years and based in SA.
It further says the abstracts should follow a specific format of no more than 300 words, written in English, and include information on the title, author(s), as well as institutional affiliations for all authors, to name a few.
The BRICS YSF, established at the second BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ministerial meeting in 2015, aims to provide a platform for connecting and networking among the BRICS youth in order to harness their knowledge for resolving common societal challenges through research and innovation.
Furthermore, it looks to strengthen advancement of skills and research competencies of the youth primarily below the age of 40 years drawn from science, engineering and other allied disciplines.
As part of its BRICS STI activities, SA hosted the third BRICS YSF in June 2018.
