California pilots telehealth project

The California Telemedicine Pilot Project, sponsored by Cisco, Molina Healthcare, two community health centres in San Diego, and the state of California, will connect more than 15 locations and provide health and wellness services to underserved communities throughout the state, reports HealthImaging.

According to Cisco, this pilot programme should be fully operational within six months. The sites will be equipped to deliver telemedicine primary and specialty care services using Cisco HealthPresence, a care-at-a-distance technology that combines video, audio and medical information, says the company.

The cameras and electronic scopes will enable patients to see and listen to the medical exam in the same manner as the clinician, according to Cisco.

Molina Healthcare to acquire Unisys

Molina Healthcare has agreed to buy the health information management (HIM) business of Unisys for about $135 million in cash, to expand Molina's services and product offerings beyond managed care, states Reuters.

The multi-state managed-care organisation said the HIM business, which provides design, development, and business process outsourcing solutions to state governments for their Medicaid management information systems, will complement its own Medicaid health plan business.

The HIM business represents about $110 million in annual revenue, Molina said in a statement. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2010.

E-health records go OSS

DSS, a company specialising in healthcare IT solutions, has unveiled vxVista, the free and open source version of company's Vista electronic health records, says TMCnet.

'Vista' stands for Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture. Built on client-server architecture, Vista is an automated environment that supports day-to-day operations at local Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities.

This electronic health record system integrates workstations and personal computers with graphical user interfaces at Veterans Health Administration facilities, and software developed by local medical facility staff.
