BT rolls out faster broadband in Scotland

Scotland is set for a broadband boost after BT revealed plans to push fibre further into its network, PC Pro reports.

The move would be the biggest super-fast broadband push north of the border and takes a mixture of fibre-to-the-cabinet and fibre-to-the-home to 277 000 homes and businesses.

According to Public Service, the super-fast broadband boost will see increased speeds of 25Mbps-plus, allowing CD downloads in as little as 30 seconds, benefiting businesses and schools greatly.

BT has committed to covering two thirds of Britain itself. Some £530 million of additional government funding will give 90% of the population significantly increased speeds before the end of the current Parliament.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, said: "This is the biggest fibre broadband announcement we've made to date in Scotland and almost doubles the number of exchange areas being upgraded.

ZDNet states that the majority of this rollout involves fibre-to-the-cabinet, which offers up to 40Mbps download speeds now, and will next year take that up to 80Mbps. Full fibre-to-the-premises offers faster speeds - up to 110Mbps now and 300Mbps next year - but is costlier to roll out and therefore makes up a much smaller part of the overall deployment.
