What is the predominant Internet connection speed in the US?
The majority of Americans, 62%, connect to the Internet at 56kbps from home, according to June reports from Internet audience measurement service Nielsen//NetRatings.
About 17% each use high-speed broadband and a 28.8/33.6kbps modem. The rest of US Web surfers, 4%, connect at 14.4Kbps.
Nielsen//NetRatings found that surfers using a faster connection speed tend to spend more time online each month and view more pages.
Broadband users spent more than 15 hours surfing nearly 1 300 pages during the month of June, while those at 56Kbps surfed for 9 hours, consuming 613 pages.
Users connecting at 28.8/33.6Kbps spent 7 hours on the Web surfing 427 pages, while those accessing the Internet at 14.4Kbps also spent 7 hours online, but viewed only 380 pages.
Nielsen//NetRatings measures and reports Internet audience behaviour based on data collected from 62 000 home users and 8 000 at-work users in the US and 155 000 international users.
