Boeing has conducted a successful first mission system flight test of a 737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft for Turkey`s Peace Eagle programme.

During the flight from Boeing Field in Seattle, Boeing and Turkish industry engineers tested the aircraft`s communications system, including establishing links with a ground-based Boeing system integration lab and local air traffic control towers using UHF, VHF and HF radios.

"This is the first time the integrated mission system has operated in the flight environment and clears the path for additional airborne tests in the months ahead," said Mark Ellis, Boeing Peace Eagle programme manager.

US Navy green lights Lockheed Martin

The US Navy has given its final approval for Lockheed Martin to proceed with the integration and shipboard installation of the world`s first, fully-open architecture Aegis weapon system for a major surface warship.

Aegis Open Architecture will be installed in the cruiser USS Bunker Hill during its depot modernisation period, scheduled to commence in February 2008.

Aegis Open Architecture will allow the Navy to stay on technology`s leading edge through its innovative use of commonly-available commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware and open system software, enabling the service to more easily implement technology refreshes and capability upgrades to the weapon system as they are developed in the future.

UK ministry selects Northrop Grumman

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected to provide a new-generation integrated navigation and bridge system (INBS) for the UK Ministry of Defence`s Future Aircraft Carrier project.

The initial INBS design-phase contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman`s Sperry Marine business unit by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, the industrial alliance that will build the ships.

The INBS will be based on Sperry Marine`s innovative VisionMaster FT technology and will bring together all of the ships` navigation sensors and systems into a modern, efficient, ergonomic bridge to meet operational requirements. The VisionMaster FT suite utilises an advanced network architecture that will provide the ship`s watch team with a seamless integration of radar and chart functionality for optimised situational awareness and mission performance.
