Following a report on insecurities discovered by SECSI (secure e-commerce site initiative), BMW says it has secured its entire Web site through Verisign`s 128k encryption certificates.
In July, ITWeb reported that SECSI discovered insecurities on two pages on the site that could potentially expose users` details to malicious hackers. At the time, BMW received a zero security rating from SECSI due to its lack of certificates.
The site serves over 6 million page impressions a month, and boasts over 3 000 pages, all of which have been secured.
Attie Wilcocks, sales and marketing support manager, Internet systems, BMW South Africa, says BMW SA responded to the issue as soon as it became aware of the problem.
"The loophole occurred due to historical pages not being designed with changes in standards in mind. We have addressed these issues and are putting plans in place to ensure that all areas of our site remain under the most current security layer at all times.
"Over the past seven years we`ve built it into an integral part of our marketing strategy and it forms the backbone of our communication with our customers and our dealer network," says Wilcocks. "I`m pleased to confirm that no information was unduly exposed and client confidentiality was not compromised. BMW has ultimate faith in the power of the Internet as our tool for communicating effectively with our customers. Going forward, security will continue to remain a top priority."
