Ananzi booming after site revamp

Local search engine Ananzi.co.za has received almost one million extra page impressions per month since it was revamped just over six months ago.

In August 2005, the company embarked upon a comprehensive re-branding exercise, as Ananzi project coordinator Tuchinca Joao explains: "Ananzi is 10 years old this year, so we thought it was time [to renovate the Web site`s branding]".

"The revamped Ananzi logo maintains the same essence of the old logo. We did not alienate our previous look and feel - we just altered it slightly," adds MD Mark Buwalda.

The number of unique users has risen from 450 000 to 520 000 per month since the site was revamped.

Ananzi has introduced an SMS service, which allows users to send SMSes from their e-mail accounts, a free e-mail-to-fax service, and a subscription based fax-to-e-mail service.

The company aims to be a complete information portal for South Africans, offering a variety of services rather than being a straightforward search engine, notes Joao.

"We have a good local alternative search engine to the search engines around the world," she says, adding Ananzi does not aim to compete with the likes of search engine giant Google.
