Cellfind has partnered with TrafficNet and Tracker to provide motorists with a live traffic update service.

The offering, miTRAFFIC, will provide weekly subscribers with all reported traffic incidents and a traffic temperature map for areas that are within a 50km radius of the subscribed location.

“The objective of miTRAFFIC is to provide a service that gives up-to-date information on traffic incidents, allowing motorists to seek alternative routes,” says Niel Barnard, CEO of Cellfind.

The service joins other offerings in the market such as Vodafone's Live Traffic. The service gives users access to live traffic information and this includes current incident reports and a live traffic service, which links to camera feeds located across the country.

Barnard says miTRAFFIC is an improved service as motorists can see the speeds on roads and can get reports on the closest incident from their current locations.

miTRAFFIC uses Tracker's vehicle monitoring technology, SkyTrax, to determine and communicate the speed and position of these vehicles. According to Tracker, the technology is fitted to over 100 000 vehicles across the country, allowing it to provide accurate traffic readings on road networks.

Using this data, average speeds can be determined for sections of road at any time. By overlaying the information compiled by TrafficNet, which runs a national traffic incident service, a picture of traffic flow patterns and incidents can be generated and sent to users.

“With just Tracker's information alone, we are able to see where there is congestion on the roads and where traffic is flowing freely. However, by overlaying TrafficNet's information on top of ours, we can understand what the reasons for the congestion are,” says Tracker's marketing director, Michael Du Preez.

Barnard notes the service will be expanded in the future. He says the company is considering adding traffic camera feeds, routing information and traffic fine information to the service.

Cellfind says MTN and Vodacom subscribers can access this service by subscribing via the Web, SMS or USSD and WAP interfaces. Barnard says the service will be available on Cell C once the operator allows for subscription billing.

The service is charged at R12 a week and also provides traffic incidents and temperature maps for other locations as registered by the customer. Subscribers will receive 10 traffic updates per week.
