Telkom continues to make progress towards meeting its technology commitments for the 2010 Fifa World Cup - saying its “ICT readiness for 2010 [is] at an advanced state”.
Telkom says it will meet its requirements for the Confederations Cup - which will be staged in June across four venues.
It adds that the completion of that network will allow it to meet its requirements for 2010. It says “most of the ICT requirements for the 2010 Fifa World Cup will be met by the time the Confederations Cup kicks off”.
In January, the 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) reported Telkom had installed the fibre-optic cable from the public telephone exchanges to the perimeter of the stadia for the four Fifa Confederations Cup 2009 venues.
All in all, I can confidently state we're ready to make our nation proud because Telkom has teamed up to make 2010 a resounding success.

The company would then be required to extend the access network from the stadia perimeter into the Telkom carrier rooms inside the stadia - as soon as the construction of the stadia precinct is complete. The LOC also stated the access network, to the remainder of the 2010 stadia, would be installed concurrently with the Fifa Confederations Cup stadia access network implementation.
“In meeting the network requirements for the Confederations Cup, we've actually been working towards the 2010 requirements simultaneously,” says Telkom's group executive for multinational customers, Thami Magazi.
“Since our network is a meshed one, we're striving to ensure all 11 World Cup venues will be ready. Obviously, though, our focus at this stage is on the venues that have been designated for the Confederations Cup.”
The LOC also stated Telkom would provide universal solutions for all venues which will provide for maximum availability and minimal downtime - to ensure there are no service interruptions.
Telkom states the telecommunications solution it will provide will enable 99.99% availability with no single point of failure, and that any downtime will be planned and would not occur during a live broadcast.
Magazi states: “Essentially, our solution sees the deployment of identical infrastructure at all the 2010 stadia, as this universal services provisioning infrastructure optimises service delivery, maintenance and operations processes.”
Telkom says all service provisioning will be monitored from its National Network Operations Centre - which it says will allow for the early detection of faults or intrusions.
The operator also notes its partnerships have contributed to its progress. It has teamed up with Media Broadcast to meet video services requirements.
“All in all, I can confidently state we're ready to make our nation proud because Telkom has teamed up to make 2010 a resounding success,” Magazi says.
