The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) will launch the Consumer Advisory Panel (CAP), on Monday. The panel aims to advise the regulator on addressing consumer protection issues.
The CAP will also play a role in ensuring consumers are involved in the development of ICT regulations and policies, says ICASA spokesman Sekgoela Sekgoela.
Sekgoela would not disclose the names of the people who have been appointed to the panel, stating this would be announced at the launch.
When ICASA called for nominations in August, it said the panel would be made up of a minimum of nine and maximum of 13 representatives from the ICT industry.
CAP members were to include representatives from consumer advocacy organisations, equipment manufacturers, government, the small and medium enterprise sector and large corporates.
ICASA already has a Consumer Complaints Committee that addresses consumer issues as they arise, Sekgoela notes. However, ICASA intends to gain insight into ICT consumer matters to the extent that it can also address matters proactively, he adds.
The CAP was formed in compliance with the Electronic Communications Act.
