Autopage clients can expect big bills

Altech Autopage's MTN customers will be hit with hefty bills at the end of this month for data usage dating back as far as October 2006 due to a "system error".

MTN spokesman Ravin Maharaj confirms an Autopage system error led to MTN data records for eight months not being picked up and billed to its customers.

According to Janet Featherstone, marketing director for Autopage Cellular, this affected 0.0001% of Autopage's billings. Featherstone did not say exactly how many people this translated to. She did, however, say the company processes "billions of calls/usage data records" every month.

According to Featherstone, payment terms are being provided for affected customers "who request such". However, it is known that at least one Autopage MTN customer has already received a bill of up to six times the amount for which she is usually billed.

Featherstone says the problem encountered was "unfortunately due to technology advancing at a rapid rate with new forms of charges being raised by the services offered to a user".

She says with the large number of accounts that Autopage handles "complications may arise" but these "are not exclusive to Altech Autopage Cellular".
