African cellular provider MTN says it has appointed Eric Tronel to head up its Congo Brazzaville operation.

In a statement, the company says Tronel joins MTN Congo from Telecel Burkina Faso and has previously held various positions in the telecommunications industry in Europe and Africa.

Group president and CEO Phuthuma Nhleko says: "Eric has more than 11 years' experience in IT and telecommunications and I am confident of his positive contribution to MTN and, in particular, the West and Central Africa region."

The MTN Group acquired a 100% stake in Libertis Telecom, in December 2005, to deliver mobile services to 3.5 million Congolese. Since its acquisition, MTN Congo has grown its subscriber base steadily, recording 250 000 subscribers and average revenue per user of $20 by the end of September 2006.
