The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications has received 58 nominations for the five vacant positions on the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) council.
Nominees include former ICASA councillor Mamodupi Mohlala, MyADSL founder Rudolph Muller, Hellkom`s Gregg Stirton and Lee-Ann Cassie, an ICASA telecoms enforcement manager.
While Mohlala`s first term on the ICASA council expired at the end of June, she was requested to serve an additional 45 days as provided for by the ICASA Amendment Act.
Mohlala, who was not available for comment at the time of going to publication, is also a director at Mohlala Attorneys.
Muller says he was notified by parliamentary support staff that he had been nominated for the position. However, he has not signed any documentation related to the nomination.
"I don`t know what is happening on that front, but if people think that I can add value, I would be happy to serve," he says.
The committee met today to begin deliberations on the nominations for the five vacant positions. The committee will meet again on Friday, 18 August, to table a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed.
In terms of the ICASA Amendment Act, the committee must submit eight names to communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri for a final decision.
