Tariff hearings due after March

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) has confirmed the hearings scheduled to investigate SA`s high cellphone tariffs will not take place until March or April.

The hearings are to look mainly at the high cost of mobile calls, and why the introduction of increased competition in the form of Cell C into the marketplace has not reduced call costs.

Speaking to ITWeb today, ICASA councillor Tracy Cohen said: "I can`t be more specific [about the date of the hearings], but I can say it won`t be in January or February, so that leaves March or April."

In its discussion document on mobile prices, ICASA says the original complaint regarding "various aspects of mobile call charges in SA" was received by the Communications Users Association of SA in May last year.

Interested parties had until September to submit written comment on the issue.
