MTN Group has confirmed that it is to make a joint bid for Egypt`s third cellphone licence, according to a statement released to the JSE yesterday.
The MTN Group corporate affairs department told ITWeb that it has "entered into a partnership with Raya, Golden Pyramids Plaza (GPP) and Stars Communications to form a consortium bidding for the third GSM licence in Egypt."
Details of the partnership were not available, but MTN described it as a broader consolidation of its footprint in Africa.
Egypt`s third cellular operator is only due to roll-out in 2007 at the earliest.
MTN currently has 20.6 million subscribers across 10 African countries - Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d`Ivoire, Congo Brazzaville, Nigeria, Rwanda, SA, Swaziland, Uganda and Zambia.
