Cellular providers mum on CUASA criticism

Johannesburg, 17 Feb 2005

Cellular providers have not yet responded to complaints by the Communications Users Association of SA (CUASA) about SA`s "exorbitant" cellular tariffs.

Vodacom, Cell C and MTN were unable to provide any official comment yet, saying that responses were being drafted.

CUASA spokesman Ray Webber yesterday slated local cellphone tariffs, saying the fact that calls to international destinations such as the UK, US and Australia are now less expensive than calls from Telkom lines to local cellular phones could only be described as absurd.

"The fixed to mobile interconnect tariffs are way out of line and it is well known that cellular operators are making a killing at the expense of their users," said Webber, adding that the arrival of third cellular operator, Cell C, appears to have had little effect on reducing call costs.

ITWeb will post the responses from the cellular operators as they become available.
