The local market could see as many as five players in the local third-generation (3G) market space, says Umoya Networks CEO Peter Baretta.
"We already have Sentech`s offering, Vodacom says they plan to have 3G by December, and MTN plans to be ready by mid-next year. We should also see a new entrant in WBS Wireless Systems by early next year, and the SNO [second national operator] also has an option for 3G in its licence, so they are a possibility too," he says.
Baretta, who will present at Futurex Cape 2004: The Conference, says this increased competition will benefit consumers. "They can expect easier Internet access, a cheaper service in the long-term, and also more options for users to choose from."
In his presentation at Futurex, Baretta will look at the overall scope of 3G. "I will discuss the options available for users, and look at how all these options fit together. I will also mention WiFi and WiMax. Basically, I will position all the different technologies in this space."
The Futurex conference will be held at the Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town on 29 and 30 September. To register, click here.
