Oracle Beehive was introduced at Oracle OpenWorld 2008, in San Francisco, this week.
The collaboration platform will help customers to simplify computing environments, lower cost and risk, says Oracle.
Terry Olkin, chief architect and VP, Oracle server technology, says Oracle Beehive is a comprehensive, open standards-based enterprise collaboration platform that delivers integrated team workspaces, calendar, instant messaging and e-mail.
He says the product aims to help companies secure communications and add collaboration into business processes and give them more choice and flexibility.
The release is in line with Oracle's broader strategy of delivering product suites on an open, standards-based middleware and database architecture, he adds.
"Oracle Beehive gives a centralised, secure and auditable collaboration platform that helps businesses lower the costs and complexities of both regulatory compliance and legal discovery."
Through integrated services and open hot-pluggable architecture, companies are able to embed collaboration directly into the business applications and processes. Users can then use the product's collaboration services from within applications and a wide range of client interfaces, Olkin says.
Beehive can also extend IT investments and lower administration complexity by leveraging the existing infrastructure, he notes.
"Oracle Beehive is the first truly integrated collaboration platform that understands diverse modes of collaboration through a unified object model. Its robust security model and an open, integrated and extensible set of collaboration services will transform the way organisations collaborate."
