Software giant Oracle has unveiled server virtualisation software, Oracle VM, that supports both Oracle and non-Oracle applications.
According to Oracle chief corporate architect Edward Screven, the software provides scalable, low-cost server virtualisation that he says is up to three times more efficient than existing products from other vendors.
Oracle VM consists of open source server software and an integrated Web browser-based management console, and runs on x86 and x86-64-based systems, across an enterprise, he explains.
Screven says Oracle VM broadens the company`s support for grid computing by enabling users to virtualise across servers and within them.
Combined with Oracle VM, its grid computing-based solutions together are capable of virtualising all infrastructure resources, as a well as data and applications, he explains. He says this creates a cost-effective and agile IT environment, while providing a total virtualisation solution for the data centre.
He adds that users can maximise resource consolidation by installing the application with Oracle Unbreakable Linux, and run the company`s complete software stack, all with one worldwide support call.
"Enterprises of all sizes are increasingly embracing virtualisation to consolidate resources, better leverage commodity hardware and further reduce computing costs," adds John Humphreys, VP of enterprise virtualisation at the IDC. "Products like Oracle VM can be excellent tools that enable IT to increase their server utilisation, and dramatically reduce complexity and overall total cost of ownership."
The company says Oracle VM is based on the open source Xen hypervisor technology and will be available for free download from today.
