Xbox invites local musicians to create soundtracks

Imagine your own track playing on the trailer of some of the world's most popular games.

Johannesburg, 23 Apr 2007

The local music industry is abuzz following this last weekend's South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

There is no doubt that local talent is achieving extraordinary things across all genres, and Xbox 360 is now extending the possibilities, with the new "Soundtracks" initiative. The Xbox South African team, who was at the event, is encouraging our country's musicians to embrace the Xbox Soundtracks programme.

The programme is all about creating music, inspired by next-generation high-definition games on the Xbox 360. Xbox is working with artists across Europe and South Africa to create new music, inspired by the excitement and realism of Xbox 360 games. Xbox Soundtracks invites 'musos' from all genres of music to download trailers and score music to them, when the contest goes live in May this year.

Khan Morbee, lead singer of The Parlotones, said: "Xbox Soundtracks is an awesome initiative. Not only is it a creative way to showcase the synergy between music and gaming, but it's an opportunity for immediate global exposure for local music. The Xbox 360 games are so vivid and real that I can only imagine how powerful the trailers will be. I can't wait to get cracking on this one."

South African musicians, both professional and aspiring, are able to upload their music creation, accompanied by the video trailer, back to the site http://www.xbox.com/en-ZA/music, and allow people across the globe to rate their productions. Artists of some of the favourite tracks will have the opportunity to spend time in studio with Universal Music, and have their track professionally produced.

"It's about time that music takes its melodies from the creators' minds, from the studios and from the stages to an awesome platform such as Xbox 360 gaming and Xbox 360 soundtracks. There's fun in all of this, and if it's from South Africa, I'm definitely a fan," said Elana Afrika.
