MapIT releases Digi-Nav 2007

MapIT, the digital navigation services company, has released the latest version of its Digi-Nav mobile navigation software.

The upgrade package costs R450, while the entire package, for new buyers, costs R1 499.

"The most important reason that people should want to upgrade is because of the improvements to the coverage and the points of interest (POI)," says MapIT MD Ray Wilkinson.

With the personal navigation market exploding, the accuracy of its maps is what distinguishes Digi-Nav and other MapIT products from the competition, says Wilkinson.

He expects 200 000 navigation devices - of all brands - will be sold in SA this year, up from 90 000 last year.

MapIT has upped the number of points of interest (POI) from 28 000 to 51 000, and map coverage by 36%, says Wilkinson, adding that the software is able to accurately guide the motorist, cyclist or pedestrian to major hotels, banks, petrol stations, hospitals and tourist attractions in 1 000 South African cities and towns.

For Digi-Nav 2007 the Pretoria, Witwatersrand and Durban maps have been upgraded and an additional 94 towns have been added to the database. Update times have also been improved, Wilkinson says.

In your pocket

Typically integrated on a Pocket PC such as HP's iPAQ or smart phones such as i-mate's K-JAM, Digi-Nav features a touch screen and an auto-memory function that stores destination details. A "look-ahead" function hides unneeded keys to de-clutter the on-screen keyboard and features predictive texting.

To allow for navigation while driving, Digi-Nav gives audio prompts in either a male or female voice in a choice of languages. Using GPS positioning and route planning is possible down to street number level.

Digi-Nav is not only of use in SA. A partnership between Map-IT and European mapware leaders MAP&GUIDE allows for the use of multiple map datasets. "Travellers to Europe can access MAP&GUIDE software and take Digi-Nav along," says Map-IT communications manager Lorraine Deane.

Deane adds that MapIT will shortly launch Digi-Route route planner as an extension to Digi-Nav.
