Effective PM must be enterprise-wide

According to a global research study by management consulting firm Business Improvement Architects, From Crisis to Control: A new era in strategic project management, departmentally based project management offices (PMOs) are successful in their own silos, but not accepted outside their span of influence.

The study found 60% of department PMOs said that all levels of their department embraced the PMO, while 57% of survey respondents said that all levels of the organisation didn`t embrace the direction of the PMO, according to a statement.

It seems that many PMOs fail to address strategic priorities of the organisation because they are departmentally based and cannot assess how well each project fits with organisational priorities and key corporate strategies. This leads to lack of executive sponsorship and dismantling of the PMO within one to three years.

Project management and automation are quickly becoming the most critical elements of the design and verification process. The key ingredients are good specification development and metric-based checkpoints, reports EETimes.

The ability to "begin with the end in mind" allows for optimal resource usage, much higher design quality and realistic schedule estimates for customers.

Today`s design and verification flows often miss cross-functional problems. The flows tend to focus primarily on individual tasks, engine performance or languages, rather than on defining the entire verification challenge or team interdependencies.
