Oracle plans open source `installfest`

Oracle SA will stage a Linux and Java `installfest` that will allow developers to install the Oracle JDeveloper development toolset on Linux onto their own PCs at no cost.

Oracle`s installfest, to be held at the LinuxWorld conference, forms part of its strategy to increase the awareness and use of Novell`s SUSE Linux, the Oracle JDeveloper suite and its complementary tools, as well as Oracle`s Database 10/g/ Standard Edition 1, for up to two processors.

Oracle database marketing manager Johan Bornman says the event can accommodate about 60 developers, who can either register at Oracle`s LinuxWorld stand or reserve their seats telephonically.

"We will kick things off at 5.30pm on 19 May, and developers should bring their own notebooks or desktop PC CPUs - monitors, mice and keyboards will be supplied - and be prepared to conduct `major surgery` on their machines."

All attendees will receive licences and installation media for the relevant tools.

Participants can also enter the Oracle Space Sweepstakes competition, in which one developer from the Europe, Middle East and Africa region will win a $90 000 sub-orbital space trip.

The LinuxWorld conference and exhibition will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 17 to 20 May.

Interested developers can contact Annalie on 084 370 5477 or e-mail their details to cma@global.co.za.
