The Internet Service Providers' Association of SA (ISPA) is still on the hunt for a host for the Johannesburg Internet Exchange (Jinx). The association hopes to find a host for the exchange for the 2009 to 2012 period.
According to ISPA's Jinx working group chairman, Rob Hunter, the exchange, which is currently hosted by Internet Solutions (IS), is a possible revenue generator for any potential hoster.
Hunter says it is difficult to put a figure to the kind of revenue boost a company can expect when hosting the exchange, but he points to the explosive growth IS experienced during its hosting term. "We like to think that Jinx had something to do with that."
The new host will have to conform to certain initial criteria, he says. "How much it will cost our members to move to its hosting facilities, the service and availability levels it is able to commit to, and value-added services such as monitoring, remote consoles and security.
"In addition, preference will be given to sites that provide equal or better access to telecommunication facilities than the current location."
Adding to this, ISPA says prospective Jinx hosts must be able to offer 24-hour on-site access for all ISPA members using Jinx. The host's data centre will need to offer fully redundant air-conditioning systems, UPS and power reticulation systems, as well as backup generators, and fire protection systems.
"The site must also provide full access to the services of existing and future electronic communications network service providers."
The association has opened the application process to its members, as well as any outside party that may be interested.
