Google SA has announced the first set of online gadgets to offer local users content focusing on the country's issues.

Google says the online gadgets feature applications that offer users a convenient way of converting South African rands to any currency, understanding local slang and proverbs, and daily advice on HIV and TB.

In this way, Google uses mini-applications that make information and content available to iGoogle and other services.

"The gadgets can be searched on the Web by clicking on 'add stuff' on www.igoogle.com and searching for terms such as 'South African slang'. It's free and users can sign up using their Gmail account details," says the company.

The gadgets were developed by Quirk eMarketing in conjunction with SANTA, LifeLine Southern Africa, Kwela Books and the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society.

Marion Gamel, head of marketing for Google SA, says: "The purpose of creating the first four local gadgets is to motivate SA users, students and companies to create many more SA-specific gadgets. We know the creativity is out there."
