Fixed-line operator Telkom has warned customers of a new bandwidth theft scam.
"This scam is conducted through hoax e-mails, requesting Internet customers to confirm their usernames and passwords," says Telkom's executive for converged business services group Steven White.
Telkom did not send its customers such a request and, as such, asks that they ignore these e-mails, he says.
TelkomInternet will never request its customers to confirm their usernames and passwords via e-mail, White adds.
White notes that TelkomInternet has introduced an online password management tool, which enables its customers to securely change their account passwords and e-mail passwords online, on a regular basis.
Last October, Telkom warned its customers of rogue dialling and bandwidth theft, stating that customers were liable for usage costs.
Thokozani Mvelase, acting executive of Telkom's asset and revenue protection services, said thieves may block the rightful owner's ability to continue accessing e-mail or the Internet. Usually, the rightful user is then forced to buy additional bandwidth, he said.
