ISPA membership grows

The Internet Service Providers Association of SA (ISPA) increased membership by 23% between February 2006 and February 2007, doubling its growth from the previous year. In the 2005/6 year, ISPA grew 12%, the association says in a media statement.

Membership of the 11-year-old Internet industry body stands at 129 large, medium and small Internet service and access providers.

ISPA GM Ant Brooks says membership numbers increase almost on a monthly basis, and he attributes this to ISPA achieving many of its goals. For example, he says: "Government has taken tangible steps towards deregulating the telecoms industry and voice over IP is now legal."

The rise in membership figures can also be attributed to the fact that entities are taking various industry issues, such as privacy, consumer protection, spam and protection of minors, more seriously than before, he says.

ISPA serves as an active industry body, facilitating exchange between the different independent Internet service providers, the Department of Communications, the Independent Communications Authority of SA, operators and other service providers in SA.
