A Free State-based attorney has launched a road safety Web site aimed at backing the work of Arrive Alive. The site tracks road deaths and offers safety advice in a bid to cut SA`s high road death toll.

The site, www.arrivealive.co.za, was launched in March this year and is reported to be attracting widespread attention. Its creator, Bloemfontein Advocate Johan Jonck, says the site has had over 76 000 hits since its low-key launch, and was named Site of the Week by 5fm. It has received positive comment from several other media.

Jonck, whose mother was killed in a motor vehicle accident when he was a child, says he financed the project himself, in the hope that the site would save lives. The site was developed by Bloemfontein-based Chillies Internet Strategists, who also developed the Bloemonline and FScheetas Web sites, among others.

"The Minister of Transport has invited individuals and private business to join hands in promoting road safety. The success of the site will depend on this being a combined effort and I would like to urge everyone to contribute through criticism, recommendations, advice and ideas," says Jonck.

"I have also discussed with Jack Church in the US his website, www.arrivealive.com , and believe that we can through this website not only address drunken driving but all aspects of road safety. "

Jonck says new additions planned for the site include possible 'mock tests` for learners` licences and celebrity views on road safety.
