HP unveils servers

Johannesburg, 02 Apr 2009

HP has released its new line of generation 6 ProLiant G6 servers, based on Intel's quad-core Xeon 5500 platform.

Rory Green, product manager of HP TSG Industry Standard Servers, says: “Our new server range is the largest roll-out of server updates we have ever done, and is a complete update across all platforms, including towers, racks and blades.”

Says Green: “With the increase in performance and speed, virtualisation opportunities and cost efficient power solutions, the ProLiant G6 servers are the most efficient servers any organisation, including SMEs, will get today. With cost cutting, environmental legislation and increased performance and productivity at the centre of all business these days, our new servers will ensure a rapid return on investment and will free up IT to focus on more pressing issues.”

With performance in mind, the server range features an on-board administrator, simplifying the set-up and enabling the monitoring of performance from anywhere across the world, even when servers are offline. Further attributes include an insight control environment management console and Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet module, allowing for 10Gb Ethernet bandwidth across four network interface card connections.

As green IT and environmental legislation becomes more of an issue in today's business environment, the ProLiant servers sport new additions, including automatic thermal tracking and automatic adjustment through a set of smart sensors. Adds Green: “Also new is the introduction of a common power slot, allowing users to choose from four power supplies to match their specific workload needs.” He notes that up to 92% energy efficiency has been achieved.

A further new feature is the Dynamic Power Capping, which dynamically distributes power and cooling resources across the data centre.

Powered by Intel's Xeon 5500 processors and running HP Smart Array Modular Controllers, the G6 servers gives twice the memory and storage of previous generation servers and a 100% overall performance increase, Green says. This means customers are halving their server numbers, while increasing performance and decreasing their carbon footprint.

The HP Server Migration Pack allows for automated server migration from the old to the new.

Most of the new HP ProLiant G6 platforms are available today, with prices starting from EUR880, based on the configurations.
